Michelle Maistro’s Walnut Tart Recipe: Gastronomy of Marriage

I have been cooking my way through Michelle Maistro’s The Gastronomy of Marriage: A Memoir of Food and Love, which is a fabulous, easy, quick read.  I love this cream cheese crust and walnut or pecan pie filling… and children love the novel idea of mini pies (or mini tarts really).  These are great for at a party or for when “finger foods” are needed.

Michelle Maistro’s Recipe for Walnut Tarts: Gastronomy of Marriage:

Ingredients for Pie Crust  / Tart Crust:
– 8 ounces cream cheese
– 1 stick butter
– 1 cup flour

Ingredients for Walnut or Pecan Tart Filling:
– 1 egg, beaten
– 3/4 cup brown sugar
– 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
– 1 tsp vanilla extract
– 1 tsp butter, melted

Directions:
1.  Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
2.  Place your mini muffin tray in the fridge so that it gets cool.
3.  Mix the crust ingredients together.
4.  Place a teaspoon of the crust dough into each mini muffin cup.
5.  Push the dough into the cup to form a “pie crust” that is about as thick as an orange peel.
6.  Return the mini muffin tin to the fridge so that it stays cool while you make the filling.
7.  Mix all of the filling ingredients together.
8.  Put the filling mixture into the crust.  Don’t fill the crust all the way to the top.
9.  Bake 20-30 minutes or until your crust is a light brown color.
